I am Back Because I Heard YOU Calling me!
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV)
On August 23, 2021, I was back.
In August thirty years ago, I just graduated from university, green and passionate, and stepped into Trans World Radio to do the ministry of broadcasting the Gospel to China.
In that year the Chinese received the baton from the missionaries. But we only had six years to prepare ourselves for the tremendous changes in face of Hong Kong's return to the motherland.
It was the then Executive Director Rev Samuel Wong who took the baton, after he accomplished his mission as Executive Secretary in the Billy Graham’s Crusade in Hong Kong. Under his leadership, we fought very fierce battles for six years, which seemed like a threefold of eighteen years.
At that time, there were difficulties both in and out. Doing shortwave broadcast was itself a big challenge. To push it beyond limit, we must also launch a decentralization plan to put all our eggs in several baskets instead of just one. We made it. Before 1997, we were able to set up a production center in Taiwan, San Francisco and Melbourne, respectively. Together with the original one in Hong Kong, we then had four, and I became the Area Director (Hong Kong). Just as Rev Wong was preparing to meet the historical moment of Hong Kong's return, the Holy Spirit however dismissed HIS servant in peace in May. In grief of loss, and having accomplished the mission of my times, I also dismissed myself from TWR after resignation at the end of July.
Exactly twenty four years have passed. Times have changed. China has changed. Hong Kong has changed. Technology has turned the broadcast media upside down. Nowadays, TWR worldwide partners can produce Chinese programs and develop different e-networks to broadcast them, transcending temporal and territorial boundaries. Amidst all these changes, one thing however remains unchanged, i.e. the listeners in mainland China remain the burden and commitment of TWR HK. God still uses TWR HK to fulfill HIS great commission to the fellow countrymen of China.
Thirty years have gone by. Here I come back again, something I never ever dream of. It is like “resurrection” of someone who first lived thirty years back. It is also like the country of Israel being restored on May 14, 1948 after more than 2,500 years of demise. Dry bones can come to life. They can stand up on their feet to become a vast army. This prophesy is true indeed. (Ezekiel 37)
Now that the Lord again enlists me into the army, at this time and age, I know the challenges ahead are far greater and much unpredictable than back in those years. But I deeply trust that the Holy Spirit will lead us by HIMSELF, teach us the way to go, and fight for us. I also truly believe that HE will bring those who belong to HIM to join us on this road to fight the good battle. Final victory will surely belong to us and to God whom we follow. Amen.
